When my middle school students come to the library each week, I like to pick their brains and see what they're actually reading for fun these days. It helps me keep up with what I need to have in the library collection and what I should be reading. Here's a sampling from some enthusiastic 6th grade readers...
- The Name of This Book Is Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch
- The Amulet Series by Kazu Kibuishi
- Satchel Paige: Striking Out Jim Crow by James Sturm
- Secret School by Avi
- All the Lovely Bad Ones by Mary Downing Hahn
- Other Side of the Island by Allegra Goodman
- Kin (The Good Neighbors series) by Holly Black

My middle schooler is reading Caleb's Choice as an assignment, but he's reading Skullduggery Pleasant for fun. REALLY seems to love it, and he's generally a reluctant reader. Before that, he read Z by an author I can't recall.
I haven't heard of any of these, I think I must be out of the loop for middle school age. My children are in preschool and elementary school and on my own I often read YA. Thanks for the list!
Oh, I love the stacks of books on your top photo and the color coding. Very inviting blog!
My kids are a little bit older than the kids that you work with, but I wonder if they might like any of these books. I am going to have to do a little research...
This is a smart post! I love to see what this age group is reading.
